100 페이지까지 정말 고민하면서 읽었다. 계속 읽는 것이 시간 낭비는 아닌지 걱정을 할 정도였다. 100 페이지를 기준으로 이야기가 활기를 띄기 시작하면서 200 페이지를 넘으니 집중력이 생겼다. 어떻게 보면 흔하고 지루한 내용의 연속이고 'Domestic Violence' 같은 답답한 이야기가 주를 이루는 초반은 재미가 없었다. 후반에 "진짜 엄마"를 찾아가는 주인공들의 여행은 그 나마 기억에 남는다. 일부 일본독자들의 주장처럼 문장이나 표현이 비교적 쉽다. 책의 내용을 떠나서 진도가 상당히 잘 나가는 책이다. 핵심어는 family affairs, domestic violence, stillborn, charity shop, letters, war, alcoholism, hatred, miscarriage, adopted, prejudiced, friendship, journey, devotion, remorse 등이다.
