"This is a work of fiction although the general outline of Mata Hari's life is based on real events, and the author has attempted to reconstruct her life based on history ..." 라는 부분이 이 책의 전체적인 흐름을 잘 보여주고 있다. 개인적으로 'Mata Hari' 라는 인물을 피상적이지만 알고 있었고, 저자가 Paulo Coelho 이기 때문에 처음부터 기대를 갖고 읽기 시작했다. 주인공이 '스파이'라는 선입견이 너무 강해서 인지 스파이장르를 생각하면서 읽기 시작했지만 .... 페미니즘 장르에 속하지 않을까 .. 하는 생각을 했다. 단순한 역사적 사실을 열거 하기보다는 주인공의 심리적 갈등과 여성으로서의 삶에 대한 고민을 잘 보여주는 작품이다. 사실 책의 제목이 'The Spy'이지만 이 책을 읽은 사람들은 아마 'Math Hari' 라는 인물을 스파이로 보기 보다는 불공평한 시대에 불행한 삶을 살았던 한 여성으로 생각하게 될 것이다. 문장이 비교적 쉽고 이해하기에 편하다.
