"I avidly enjoyed the Sister Fidelma mysteries several years ago. Having finished another historical series I was casting about looking for another series to read, but nothing I came across seemed to tick all the boxes for me. I found myself wishing I could find another series like Sister Fidelma mysteries. I realised I didn't have to find another right away - I could just begin the Sister Fidelma series again. And that's what I did. It's been long enough since I read them the first time that I didn't recall the ending. Once again I was transported back in time, finding myself at the historic Synod at Whitby. Once again Peter Tremayne brought the location and characters alive as I gave up on trying to keep ahead of Fidelma and Eadulf - I was happy just keeping up with them ..."

"シリーズは原作の刊行順に読みたいので、まず本作を手にした。最初の方で時代設定を頭に入れるのに手間取ったがその後はさくさく進んだ。登場人物の魅力が大きく現代ものでは単純な事件でも興味深く読めるし、当時の衣食住に関する部分の説明が非常に興味をそそられた。巻末に長い注釈があり、それを確認しながら本文を読み進めていたが、気が散って読みにくく、説明も位置や年代が多くて必須とは思えなかったので、興味をそそられた単語だけ拾うことにしたらずっと読み易くなった。（深い理解は得られないかもしれないので、お勧めというわけではないが…）なお出品者から購入したが、書き込みがあって腹立たしく感じた..."

  이 책에서 가장 인상에 남는 문장은 Ammianus Marcellinus( AD 330-95)가 쓴 "No wild beats are so cruel as the Christians in their dealings with each other."이다. 읽다 보면 움베르트 에코의 '장미의 이름' 이 먼저 떠오른다. 작품의 배경이 되는 시대나 분위기가 비슷하다. 숀 코너리라는 명배우가 등장하는 영화도 인상 깊게 본 기억이 있다. 이 책에는 Fidelma라는 수녀가 주인공인데 시대 배경이 7세기 중엽이라는 배경에도 불구하고 주인공의 사고나 행동방식은 현대 여성들보다 더 진보적이고 합리적인 거 같다. '장미의 이름' 못지않게 지적인 분위기의 작품이고 의미 있는 문장들이 많이 등장한다. 권력싸움, 종교적 갈등, 성 정체성, 전염병, 사랑의 의미, 무지, 편견 등 현대를 배경으로 하는 작품들에서 등장할 수도 있는 다양한 주제들이 다루어지고 있다. 수도원이나 종교적인 의미를 갖는 낯설은 표현들이 등장한다. 특히 종교적인 표현들은 검색을 하면서 읽었는데 뜻을 찾기도 힘든 단어도 있었다.
