"Not such a roller coaster as some of his other books but in some ways more intriguing. A mystery surrounding the Irish famine which if it really happened this way could be mind blowing. The author always gives food for thought. In the beginning Ben's troubles seem to mount up to the point that he really seems to have let himself go and actually fails to save a damsel in distress! So he has to pull himself together, regain his skills and get ready to redeem himself and avenge the lady. This of course, leads to the usual earth shattering fights where Ben saves the entire world against impossible odds! If I want to escape from the real world I disappear into one of Scott's books for a few hours!"

제목만 보면 2차 세계대전 때의 유태인에 대한 대량학살을 생각나게 되지만 사실 이 작품의 내용과는 전혀 상관이 없다. 이 책도 다른 작품들처럼 실제로 발생했던 역사적 사실을 기초로 허구적 요소를 가미한 내용의 작품이다. 아일랜드의 역사나 미국 이민의 역사를 좀 아는 사람들이라면 아일랜드에 발생했던 기아에 대해서 들어본 적이 있을 것이다. 이 책에서는 당시에 영국 정부의 아일랜드에 대한 착취 정책과 지배계급들의 탐욕이 비참한 비극의 원인이라고 암시하고 있다. 아일랜드에 대한 역사를 좀 배울 수 있는 좋은 기회였다. 핵심어는 journal, blade, fake identification, weapons, famine, genetics 등이다. 문장이나 표현 등은 무난하다.
