"...... 帝国に支配される辺境の町。そして遠方から移動してくる姿の見えない夷狄。この構図は、古代ギリシアのポリスに対するbarbaroi、古代ローマに対するgalliを連想させに充分であり、原題Waiting for the barbariansからも、作者の古典に対する意図は充分伺われると思います。とある時代、とある場所の帝国が舞台。主人公は初老の民政官である私。そこへ帝国の治安警察の将校が視察にやって来ます。最重要部門第三局に所属するサディストのジョル大佐、彼は、辺境の夷狄との戦争が始まるのだと言います。反発する私。ふたりの対立を軸に、ジョル大佐の遠征、捕虜の連行、果てしない暴行が繰り広げられ、私は連れて来られ盲にされた女と奇妙な関係を持つに至ります。女を夷狄の部隊に返そうと、今度は私が遠征する。しかし、帰ってくると、夷狄に通じたとして反逆罪に問われてしまう。激しい拷問。そして野良犬のような生活。やがて夷狄による本格的な攻撃が始まります。戦局は悪化し、駐屯軍の撤退が始まり、取り残された私たちは、夷狄を待ちながら最後の時を過ごすのです……"
