이 책은 2차 세계대전이 끝나는 시기를 시작해서 월남전 전후로의 이야기가 중심이 되는 책이다. 진보와 보수, 인종차별, 성차별 등 미국의 차별적 역사에 대한 한 여성의 용감한(?) 도전을 보여주는 책이다. 이 책을 극단적으로 나누면 보수적이고 차별적인 성향을 갖는 사람들의 몰락(?)을 보여주고 그런 사람들에 대한 전형적인 묘사가 두드러진다. 반면에 주인공을 중심으로 진보적인 사람들의 모습은 희생적이고 인간적이고 이성적인 모습을 보여준다. 정치적 성향에 따라서 다르게 평가될 수 있는 책이다. 단편적이지만 미국의 역사를 볼 수 있는 기회를 제공한다는 점에서 읽어도 큰 후회는 없지 않을까 싶다. 핵심어는 concentration camp, survivor, justice, feminism, segregation, religious prejudice, gender bias, racial barriers, movements, antiwar, murders, adopt, vandalism 등이다.
