이 책은 책으로 시작해서 책으로 끝난다고 말해도 좋을 만큼 책이라는 것이 얼마나 큰 힘을 가질 수 있는가를 잘 보여주는 작품이다. 권력의 힘을 말하기보다는 책을 읽고자 하는 어린 소녀의 갈망이 어떻게 소녀를 선장 시키는지를 잘 보여주는 작품이다. 책, 도망, 행운의 만남, 종교 등이 핵심어이다. YA 계열의 작품이지만 "BOOK THIEF" 같은 작품처럼 나이에 상관없이 읽을 수 있는 작품이다. 문장이나 표현 등이 읽기에 비교적 무난해서 영어공부에도 좋다. 유대교에 대하여 간접적으로 접할 수 있는 기회를 제공한다는 점도 나름 장점이다.
