독일이 우리나라처럼 서독과 동독으로 나누어져 있던 시절이 이 책의 시대적 배경이고 영국, 소련 등 나라 간의 첩보전을 긴장감 있게 보여주고 있는 작품이다. 현대의 스파이 장르에 익숙한 독자들은 좀 지루하다고 볼 수도 있지만 이야기의 전개가 좀 더 현실적이고 주요 인물 간의 긴장관계를 잘 보여주는 작품이다. 출판된 시기가 좀 되었지만 지금도 전 세계의 독자들에게 사랑받는 작품이다. YouTube를 검색하면 참고할만한 자료들이 많은 거 같다. Richard Burton이라는 배우가 등장하는 영화도 봤는데 원작과는 다른 점도 있지만 나름 잘 만든 작품인 거 같다. 독자의 원서 경험에 따라서 다르겠지만 표현이나 문장이 크게 어렵지는 않고 장편도 아니기에 읽어 볼 만하다.  Google에서 검색하면 preview 가 가능하니 참고하면 될 듯싶다.
