The three year old Maine coon cat named Diesel is no exception. He owns Mr Charles Harris who works as a rare book cataloger in the college library. Harris is approached by the wealthy Mr. James Delacourt to catalogue his own extensive rare book collection as he believes some of them have been stolen. Harris readily accepts with only one condition. Diesel must be allowed to accompany him while he works in Delacourt's library in his mansion. Next Harris meets the cast of usual characters, family members,and household help including the butler. Sean Harris, his son returns from Los Angelos with a secret and a new puppy named Dante. His is a lawyer now without a job and offers to help his Dad do the sorting at Delacorte's home where they discover several valuable manuscripts missing. But the worst is yet to come, when Harris finds Delacourt dead in a chair in his office. Charles and Sean are determined to prove his murder and find his killer. The cat and the puppy add delightful humour to the story...."

'rare books' 에 관한 이야기가 중심이다 보니 많은 책들이 작품 속에서 등장한다. 특히 초반 본의 책들에 대한 설명이나 묘사가 흥미롭다. 다른 코지 작품들에서는 주로 여성들이 주인공인 경우가 많은데 이 작품에서는 남자가 주인공이고 도서관 사서이다. 특히 'maine coon'이라는 큰 종의 고양이에 대한 묘사가 많은 부분을 차지하는데 이 작품의 또 다른 매력이다. 인상에 남는 액션 장면이나 갈등구조를 보여주는 작품은 아니지만 한번 읽기 시작하면 계속 읽게 만드는 작품이고 전체적으로 문장이 어렵지는 않지만 가끔씩 등장하는 '신선한' 단어나 표현 등은 있다.
