전 영국 SAS 특수대원이고 옥스퍼드에서 신학을 공부했던 주인공 Ben Hope의 이야기는 정말 끝이 없는 거 같다. 작가의 상상력에 경의를 표한다. 흥미진진한 액션 모험 영화를 보는 거 같았다. 역사적 사건에 기초한 이야기의 전개 또는 허구적 이야기의 사실적 묘사 등은 이 작품이 가지는 매력이다. 1958년 영국 첩보원이 모스크바에서 KGB요원들에게 잡히는 것부터 이야기는 시작된다. 이혼한 남편과 딸의 실종에 대한 의뢰를 받은 Ben Hope는 모스크바로 떠난다. 이 작가의 작품들이 늘 그렇듯이 사건은 또 다른 사건을 야기한다. 즉 납치사건이 Mind Control과 관련된 거대한 조직과의 목숨을 건 싸움으로 바뀐다. 이 작가의 작품들의 장점은 비교적 장편이지만 읽기가 편하다는 것이다. 가끔씩 등장하는 낯선 단어들도 있지만 비교적 쉬운 편에 속하는 작품들이다. 이 시리즈를 초반부터 읽기 시작한 독자들은 잘 알겠지만 작품들 속에서 등장하는 한국과 일본에 대한 묘사가 눈에 띈다는 것이다. 그리고 주인공의 '담배'에 대한 애정은 독자들의 취향에 따라서 반응이 다를 수 있을 것이다.
