The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah

"It's been about a week since I finished this and I still keep thinking about it. The writing was so raw in a way and so richly detailed that the world came alive. I felt lost in the wilds of Alaska, trapped in this home with this PTSD father, and yet so utterly enchanted by the beautiful and wild landscape that I wanted - longed even - to be there myself. I first read The Nightingale and was at first surprised a little by this novel, as it was so different from that but completely masterful in it's own way - higgling that Hannah is simply a born storyteller and writes in a way that complements the story she is working on, as this would not have been as powerful with the more lyrical and poetic elements that worked so well in the former, rather this utilised raw emotion, atmosphere and genuine page turning magic - I didn't want it to end...."

  Kristin Hannah는 정말 글을 잘 쓰는 작가이다. 전작 Nightingale은 독자들에게 깊은 울림을 주는 작품이었다. 큰 기대감을 갖고 읽기 시작했는데.... 이 작품을 읽기 전에 내용을 대충이라도 알았다면 아마 읽지 않았을 것이다. 가정폭력의 이야기, 전쟁의 후유증 즉 PTSD에 관한 이야기, 불평등한 대우를 견더야 했던 여성들의 이야기, 16세에 임신을 하고 가출한 여자의 인생에 관한 이야기, 아름다움과 가혹한 환경의 알래스카를 보여주는 이야기 등등..... 작품을 읽은 독자의 관점에 따라서 평가의 정도는 다를 거 같다. 약 576 페이지의 장편이지만 작가의 필력에 계속 읽었다. 문장이나 표현은 난이도가 크게 높지는 않고 반복되는 표현들이 많기 때문에 읽는데 도움이 된다.
