이 작품은 심리 스릴러 장르에 속하는 작품이다. 등장인물들에 대한 심리적 묘사가 뛰어나고 작가가 인물들에 대한 이야기를 직간접적으로 잘 설명해 주기 때문에 그다지 어렵지 않은 작품이다. 다만 작품이 전체적으로 어둡고 슬프다. 좀 과장 아닌 과장을 섞어서 말하지만 ... 채찍을 맞고 있는 말을 껴안고 울었다는 니체가 생각났다. 삶의 긍정을 주장한 니체지만 ... 삶이라는 것이 때때로 힘들고 잔인할 때가 있는 것이 사실이다(개인적인 해설이지만). 자살, 다단계, 고금리, 가스폭발, 복수, 후회, 속임, 가난, 실패, 절망, 사이코, 살인, 그리움, 부조리 등 읽는 거 자체가 힘든 여정이었다. 그래도 읽기 시작하면 끝까지 읽게 되는 작품이다. "There were good times, and there were bad times. Sometimes you could rely on others, and sometimes they disappointed you. Sometimes they filled you with joy, and sometimes they made you angry. That's what normal relationships were....." 라는 문장이 눈에 들어왔다.
