"Kindleで英語版を読んだのですが、難しい内容ではなかったためスラスラと読むことができました。後半に出てくるOmaiというキャラが個人的に印象的だったです。娘のMarionと再会できるのかなあと思いながら読み続けたのですが、かなり予想外の展開で驚かされました...." "Haig has done an excellent job with an interesting premise: a man who ages at 1/15 of the normal rate, so he was born in 1581 and is narrating his story in the present. Especially interesting are his memories of playing some role in notable times such as Shakespearian England, 1920’s Paris. People like the narrator must move and change identities lest their neighbors notice they are not aging and persecute them as demons (in the 20th century the danger is being enslaved and treated as lab rats, although even lab rats are now protected to some extent by ethical rules). I found it easier to accept the basic premise than his recruitment into the “Albatross Society” of people with the same condition,”anageria” : the society seems to have the ability to identify and discover all the past identities of its target recruits, yet is really a threadbare organization. This leads to a weak ending, but that is not a serious problem....."

몇 백년을 살아도 거의 늙지 않는 인물이 주인공이다. 그의 과거와 현재의 이야기가 주된 내용이다. 사랑, 우정, 음악, 가족, 음모, 실존, 역사, 인간의 의미, 교육, 마녀, 무지, 협회, 구속, 자유,편견, 두려움 등이 주요한 의미를 갖는 단어들인 거 같다. 글을 잘 쓰는 작가라 그런지 작품에 등장하는 문장들이나 표현들이 예사롭지 않다. 소설이라는 이야기를 통해서 철학적이고 인문적인 내용들을 담기도 하고 부담스럽지 않은 정도로 독자들의 지적인 호기심을 유도하는 거 같다. 영어권독자가 아닌 사람들에게는 어려운 문장들이나 표현들이 좀 있다. 가끔씩 의미를 파악하기 위해서 시간을 좀 들여야 하는 문장이나 표현들도 있기 때문에 어려울 수 있고 독자의 가치관에 따라서 글의 전개에 다른 의견을 가질 수 있는 거 같다. 구글을 검색하면 한글판 미리 보기를 접할 수 있다. 그의 다른 작품들에서 처럼 철학적, 따뜻함, 지적임, 풍자등의 요소가 이 작품에도 잘 드러난다. 읽으면서 밑줄을 치게 만드는 문장들이 많이 등장하는데 특히 몽테뉴의 ".... the point of life is to give yourself to yourself....." "He who fears he shall suffer, already suffers what he fears."라는 문장들이 인상 깊다. 그리고 "I understand that the way you stop time is by stopping being ruled by it. I am no longer drowning in my past, or fearful of my future. How can I be? The future is you."라는 문장으로 이 작품은 끝난다.
