살인혐의를 받고 구속된 소녀, 전사자들의 귀환(?), 복수의 여정, 가족의 의미, 여성의 독립, 정체성의 실체, 지키고자 하는 자 드러내고자 하는 자의 갈등.... 많은 이야기를 담고 있는 장편 허구 역사 소설이다. 이전 시리즈 작품들처럼 주인공의 명석함과 따뜻함은 계속 이어지고 있는 작품이다. 물론 난이도적인 면에서도 비슷하다. 1차 대전의 그늘이 등장인물들의 삶에 큰 영향을 주고 있는 작품이다. 그 당시에 얼마나 많은 사람들이 2차 세계대전이 곧 발생할 것이라는 것을 알 수 있었을까?  지금도 우리는 전쟁을 겪고 있고 생명과 삶의 고귀한 가치를 잃어가고 있는 많은 사람들을 목격하고 있다. 슬픈 현실이다.
