John Puller 시리즈의 두 번째 작품이다. 장편이지만 진도가 잘 나가는 편이기에 읽는데 부담이 덜하다. 초반만 지나면 읽는 것이 수월하다. 문장의 구조는 평이하고 익숙한 표현들이 많이 등장하는 작품이다. 미스터리장르, 액션장르, 가족장르 같은 요소들을 다 가지고 있는 작품이다. 성적인 묘사나 잔인한 묘사들이 좀 있지만 큰 비중을 차지하지는 않는다. 노예, 마약, 테러, 인신매매, 약탈, 가족, 배신, 추적, 바다, 탈출, 유산, 도둑, 학대, 허리케인, 복수, 정의 등이 작품을 이해하는데 도움이 될 수 있는 단어들인 거 같다. 작품 속에서 전작에 대한 언급이 많기 때문에 가능하면 1편을 읽고 읽는 것이 좋은 거 같다. 작품 속의 인물들을 통한 표현들이지만 미국 사회에 대한 작가의 관점을 엿볼 수 있다.
