The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

2019년 세 번째로 읽은 책이다. 정말 잘 읽었다. 'The Book Thief' 의 작가인 Markus Zusak 가 서문에서 이 책에 대하여 형용사들을 사용해서 설명하고 있다, 즉, lightly , excitedly, mournfully, raucously, knowingly, loudly, softly, tearfully, surprisingly, lovingly, angrily, admiringly 같은 단어들이다. 처음에는 무슨 의미인가 싶지만 읽다보면 정말 그렇게 느껴지는 소설이다. 소설은 개연성의 장르 라고 말한다. 읽으면서 '정말 그럴까?' '설마 ....' 하는 생각을 자꾸하게 만드는 소설이다. 미국사회에 대해서 다시 한번 생각하게 만드는 책이다. 그리고 '용기'라는 단어에 대해서 배우는 기회가 되었다. 인생을 많이 살아서, 많이 배워서 용기있는 것이 아니다. 소년의 자신의 환경에 대한 유며러스한 표현은 오히려 더 절실하고 진지하게 느껴지게 한다. 십대들의 시각으로 묘사되는 다른 소설들을 적지않게 읽었지만 이 책은 좀 다른거 같다. 가능하면 원서로 읽어 보시길 권장한다. 정말 재밌다. 물론 상대적이지만 이 책은 정말 쉽게 쓴 책이다! 그리고 Paul Revere & The Raiders 의  "Indian Reservation" 이라는 노래를 오랜만에 듣게 되었다. 다음과 같은 외국의 평도 있다 "たくましく成長していく少年の姿を描いた秀作 .."  "この物語は不遇の少年が、規制概念にとらわれず未来への道 ...." "Realistic and fantastical and funny and tragic-all at the same time."―(starred review), VOYA "泣きました。笑いました。勇気をもらいました。日本語訳もいいですが、やはり英語で読んだほうが泣けるし、笑えるし ... " 등 아무튼 읽을 만한 가치가 있는 좋은 책이다.

- Nervous means you want to play. Sacred means you don't want to play.
