By the time we get to Morocco with Arthur Less, I was mentally comparing Less to Lolita, though the characters are nothing alike ..." 외국독자들의 코멘트를 보면 대충 이 책을 둘러싼 반응들을 알 수 있다. 특히 "Winner of the Pulitzer Prize" 라는 문구에서는 반응이 갈리는거 같다. 게이문학이라서 그런지 모르겠다. 일본독자의 코멘트에서 처럼 문장이 좀 어려울 수 있고 책에서 언급하는 내용들이 부분적으로 생소하게 느껴질 수 있다. 하지만 읽고 나면 성취감을 느낄 수 있다(가능하면 책의 장르를 확실히 이해하고 책의 문장들을 미리 보고 구입을 하는게 좋을 듯하다). 중년의 게이남이 느끼는 상실감이나 미래에 대한 불안감 등 비교적 현실적 묘사가 좋다. 작가의 유머 또한 이 책의 장점인거 같다. 과거와 현재를 넘나드는 의식적 서술은 이 글을 입체적으로 이해하게 해주고 화자의 변화도 이 책을 읽는데 중요한거 같다. 지금까지 읽은 게이 장르의 책들은 쉽게 쓰여진 책들이 아니다. 단어의 선택이나 표현등이 다른 장르의 작가들도 그렇겠지만 신중(?)하다는 생각을 했다. "Less can think of nothing to say ; this attack comes on an undefended flank. It is our duty to show something beautiful from our world. The gay world. But in your books, you make the characters suffer without reward ...." 라는 문장이 나온다. 게이 작가와 그의 세계에 대해서 조금 들여다 볼 수 있는 기회였다. 그리고 다른 좋은 부분들도 많지만 개인적으로는 村上春樹 의 1Q84 에서도 등장하는 작가 "Proust" 가 인용되는 부분이 인상에 남는다. "Arthur Less's life with Robert ended around the time he finished reading Proust. It was one of the grandest and most dismaying experiences in Less's life - Marcel Proust, that is - and the three thousand pages of In Search of Lost Time took him five committed summers to finish ....." 개인적으로도 "Proust" 책을 3권째 읽었는데 쉽지 않은 도전이었다.  이 책의 핵심어는 journey, time, lonely, lost, unexpected meetings and happenings, birthday, middle-aged crisis, suits, books, poet, aging, separation, letters, forgiving, reunion 등이다. 올해의 독서목표가 다양한 사람들의 삶을 이해하자는 것이기에 이 책도 그런 점에서 중요한 의미를 가질거 같다.
