 이 책은 진도는 잘 나가지만 큰 재미는 없었다. 인내를 가지고 읽었다. 주인공의 방황하는 모습은 어느 정도는 이해가 가지만 주변 인물들의 혼란상은 흥미를 유발하기 보다는 다소 지루했다. 이상하고 결함투성이 가족들의 이야기이기 때문에 글의 전개에 대한 기대가 있었지만 ... 아무튼 이 책은  가족에 관한 이야기, 성장에 관한 이야기, 사랑의 이야기등 다양하게 볼 수 있겠지만 개인적으로는 독자에 따라서 읽은 느낌 그대로 받아들이면 될 거 같다. 이 책에서도 그의 다른 작품에서 처럼 글의 흐름과 관련이 있는 그림들이 삽입되어 있다.  그리고 이 책을 원서로 읽기에 부담이 가는 독자들은 책을 읽기 시작하기전에 먼저 "Reading Group Guide" 를 읽어보는 것도 이 책을 이해하는데 좋다는 생각을 했다. 핵심어는 trophy, quirky, flawed, secrets, family affairs, divorce, cheating, twins, dropout, ignored, isolated, suicide, forgive, lies, necrophilia(시체 성애), agoraphobia, dogs, atheist, drawing, therapy, tatoo, church, statue, irresponsible 등이다.
