전세계에서 가장 행복한 나라, 교육이 가장 잘 이루어지는 나라, 언론보도가 가장 신뢰가 가는 나라, 남녀평등이 잘 이루어 지는 나라, 국민의 기본권이 가장 잘 보장되는 나라 등 거의 모든 나라가 이 책에서 언급되고 있다. 다만 언급되고 있는 나라가 북유럽 즉, 덴마크, 노르웨이, 스웨덴, 아이스란드, 핀란드 등이다. 개인적으로 이 책을 읽으면서 확실하게 알게 된 것은 이 나라들에 대한 이야기는 다양한 장르의 책이나 매체를 통해서 접한 경험은 있지만 ..사실 잘 모른다는 것이다. 정말 모른다. 언론에 보도되는 기사를 너무 막연하게 받아들이고 이해했다는 반성을 하게 된다. 왜 그런지에 대한 의문을 제시하기보다는 '그런가 보다' 라는 생각으로 이 나라들에 대한 기사를 수동적으로 받아들인 점이 분명이 있다. 저자는 이런 나라들에 대한 부정적인 이야기를 말하고자 하는 것이 아니라 정확한 이해를 하는것이 중요하다는 것을 보여주고 있다. 영어원서를 구입하기 전에 미리보기나 다른 독자들의 반응을 참고하길 바란다. 일본독자들 사이에 일본어번역책이 반응이 좋은거 같다. 한국어로 번역된 책도 있는거 같은데 이런 책은 언어에 상관없이 한번쯤 읽어도 좋은거 같다. 인터넷을 검색하면서 읽어야 하는 번거로움이 있었지만 나의 무지를 깨달았다는 점에서 좋은 경험이었었다.

Looking to the future, the Nordic countries are also facing some serious challenges ......creaking welfare states, the ongoing integration of immigrant populations, and rising inequality .....

- .... as far as I am concerned there is only one place to look for the economic and societal role model of the future, and it is not Brazil or Russia or China. The Nordic countries have the answer ....
