SUNSET PARK by Paul Auster

"どれだけ素朴な読み方をしても明白なことは、この作品が、父と息子の損なわれた絆が再生する物語であるということだ。しかし、この、緻密に構築された小説世界は、私たちにより深い読み方を要求せずにはおかない。　この小説のクライマックスで、主人公Milesは、もはや将来に希望を抱くことをやめ、「今この瞬間を生きるのだ」と決意する。正直に告白すると、私は当初、これは何て陳腐な結論なんだと思った。しかし、この小説世界を改めて思い直したとき、この決意を素朴すぎる仕方で解釈してはならないことにすぐに思い至った。　物語の舞台は2008年のアメリカ。言うまでもなく、リーマン･ショック後の経済危機に見舞われているアメリカである。物語は、主人公Milesが、打ち捨てられた家々や家財の写真を熱心に撮影するシーンから始まる。いわば、Milesは、過去に生き、とり憑かれたように、失われゆく過去を保つために懸命なのだ。　主人公が過去の世界に生きていること、小説世界が、現代のアメリカを描きながら、過去への追憶を基盤 ..."

"This novel has certainly received some poor reviews since its publication but I think it to be one of Auster's best books, perhaps for no other reason than a lot of the subject matter resonated with me personally. The overarching story (if we can call it that) follows the lives of four young people who, through various misfortunes, have found themselves having to squat a dilapidated house in Brooklyn. Each character is given a separate chapter in which we learn more about their backgrounds and how their lives are entwined. It is told from the point of view of an omniscient narrator and there are large parts of exposition in which we are spoon-fed what each character is thinking and feeling and this makes it difficult for the reader to then bring their own thoughts and emotions to the text, which is usually one of joys of reading Auster ..."

이 책은 뭐라고 말해야 하나... 문학작품으로 좋은 책이다. 하지만 포용력이 떨어지는 사회나 문화에서는 이 책의 정당한 평가는 힘들 수도 있다. 지적인 내용의 책이고 등장하는 인물들의 매력도 있는 책이다. existentialism, loss, family, abandoned house, photo, writers, death, hatred, forget, forgive, reunite, books, movies, publication, art, identity, sexuality, love, run away, squatter, mature, farewell, loneliess, regret, freedom.... 등 거의 모든 문학적 테마를 다루고 있다. 이 책은 편집이나 책의 구성이 얼마나 중요한지를 말해주는 거 같다. 이 책이 흔한 이야기는 아니지만 ... 흔한 이야기라도 어떻게 책을 구성하는가에 따라서 책은 정말 다를 수 있다는 것을 보여주는 거  같다.  게다가 3인칭 서술적 시점도 작가의 탁월한 선택인 거 같다. 주인공 중심이 아닌 주요 등장인물들에 대한 다양한 관점의 서술이나 평면적이지 않은 묘사가 이 책이 가지는 좋은 점인 거 같다. 이 책에서 사용되고 있는 단어들이나 표현들도 공부에 도움이 된다.
