"After Dark is one of the best and most challenging books I’ve read in ages. I loved it. This is not my usual sort of book. At times it was like being trapped in some weird, disjoined and trippy dream; the kind of dreams where there are lots of shadows and things you can never quite see. I quite enjoyed being pulled along by Murakami’s amazing, vivid and descriptive writing. I’m not a fan of hard books and tend to get on better with books I can get through fairly quickly. This is the kind of book that reminds you of how good it feels to be completely absorbed in what an author has created between the pages (or between the back and front cover of my Kindle). I thought this was a wonderful, surprising book,,," 

10월의 마지막 밤은 무리카미 하루키의 소설을 읽기로 결정을 했었다. 오랜만에 그의 작품을 읽으면서 느낀 점은 글의 분위기가 전이나 지금이나 같다는 것이다. 이 작품의 출판 시기나 시대적 배경이 좀 지났지만 그래도 읽는데 큰 문제는 없는 거 같다. 참 쉽게 읽혀지지만 이해하는데 시간과 노력이 필요하다는 것도 여전한 느낌이다. 물론 작품을 있는 그대로 느끼고 넘기는 것도 작품 감상의 한 방법이지만 .... 왠지 분석을 해야 한다는 압박감은 무시할 수 없는거 같다. 두 개의 세계, 낮과 밤, 어둠과 빛, 외모나 성격이 다른 자매 등 이원론적인 구성이 두드러지는 작품이고 러브호텔, 통역, 폭력, 도망, 핸드폰, 후회, 우연한 재회, 수면, 도피 등이 중요한 의미를 가지는 단어들이 아닐까 싶다. 작품의 후반에 가면 상상력을 이용해서 채워야 하는 부분도 있지만 어느 정도 이해하는데 무리는 없다.
