루트비히 비트겐슈타인의 '철학적 탐구'를 인용하면서 시작되는 책이다. 쉽지 않은 책과의 만남이라는 느낌을 갖게 되었다. 특히 언어와 관련된 책들은 철학, 인문학, 심리학, 생물학, 사회학, 신경학, 역사 등 다양한 분야가 언급되기에 이해하는데 어려움이 있는게 사실이다. 원서에 등장하는 내용들을 인터넷으로 검색하면서 읽기에 속도감이나 이해도가 떨어지는 거 같아서 한국어 번역본의 도움을 받았다. 그래도 어려운 부분들은 외국의 블로그나 관련 사이트들을 방문했다.
