본문에 "It was a brick of a book, 608 pages in paperback...."라는 표현이 나오는데 이 책이야말로 페이지수로 본다면 딱 맞는 표현이 아닌가 싶다. 어느 일본 독자가 "영어원서로 읽은 책중에서 가장 재밌었다..."라는 독서평을 보고 읽기 시작했는데 내가 읽은 영어원서 중에서 최고라고는 말하기 힘들지만 꽤 재밌는 작품인 것은 확실하다. 배경이 스웨덴이라 지명이나 이름들이 낯설기도 하고 등장인물들이 많이 등장하기 때문에 이야기를 따라가는데 힘든 부분들이 있다. 하지만 초반을 잘 넘기면 속도감 있게 읽을 수 있는 작품이다. 'I can't put down the book....'이라는 표현이 어울리는 작품이다. 비영어권 독자로서 작품에 등장하는 표현들이나 영어문장들에 대해서 여려 의견이 있는 거 같지만 전반적으로는 무난하게 읽을 수 있는 작품이 아닌가 싶다. slander, libel, cover, feature, disappearance, set-up, Jew, Nazi, religious sect, expose, hacker, run away, molestation, obessive, codes, Bible, photos, chase, traitor, hunting, sex, victims, violence, travel, abnormal psychology, tattoo, isolation, lover, incompetent reporters, prison, chronicle, biography, ghost writer, killer, bridge, pressed flowers, point of view, millennium 등이 작품을 이해하는 중요한 단어들인 거 같다.
