Apple Turnover Murder by Joanne Fluke

" I begin a book by reading the back-cover blurb: "June in Lake Eden brings plenty of work for Hannah Swensen, including a three-day fundraiser. Hannah's business partner, Lisa, suggests setting up an apple turnover stand. Hannah agrees to be a magician's assistant in the event's talent show. The only snag is the show's host, Bradford Ramsey. Hannah had an unfortunate romantic relationship with Ramsey, and when he comes sniffing around between acts, Hannah tells him off. When the curtain doesn't go up, she discovers Ramsey dead --with a turnover in his hand. . . . "

 

Nothing succeeds like excess( success leads to opportunities for further and greater successes ), wait for the second shoe to drop( 올 것이 오기를 (가슴졸이며) 기다리다 ), bite your tongue( 이를 악물고 참다 ), No good deed goes unpunished( 좋은 일을 해도 인정받지 못하고 오히려 벌을 받는 경우도 있다 ), jump the gun( 섣불리 [경솔하게] 행동하다) , What's good for the goose is definitely not good for the gander( 암거위에게 유익하다고 해서 반드시 숫거위에게도 유익한 것은 아니다 ), be on pins and needles(불안해하다, 바늘방석에 앉았다) 등등 전작에 비해서 다양한 관용구어들이 나온다. 하지만 사전을 찾아보지 않아도 문맥 속에서 대략적인 뜻을 알 수 있기 때문에 작품을 이해하는데 큰 문제가 없다. 전체적으로 평이한 문장구조와 표현들로 구성된 작품이기에 속도감이 있게 읽을 수 있다. 다만 음식 특히 쿠키나 케이크 같은 음식에 대하여 관심이 없는 독자들을 큰 재미를 느끼지 못할 수도 있다. cheated women, scum, adoption, charity, wedding, reunion, offering, orphan, tomb, dog whistle, fish, cats, magic, contest 등이 작품을 이해하는데 중요한 단어들인 거 같다. 그리고 다음 작품에 대한 기대를 높이기 위해서 새로운 여인의 등장과 미스터리한 사건의 전개를 암시하고 있다.
