Seems like everyone knows or is related to someone else in this mystery. Fiona MacDonald, who would have been Hamish's wife, had he survived the war is no on trial for the murder of Eleanor Gray who disappeared several years earlier. Naturally the local police have it all wrapped up as they always do in this series but Rutledge who is sent to cross all the T's and dot all the I's sees more than the locals can fathom. And of course he must contend with his boss that is always looking for a way to get rid of him...."

전쟁이 사람들과 사회에 미치는 영향을 잘 보여주는 작품이다. 잔혹한 전쟁의 역사가 남자뿐만 아니라 여성들에게도 어떤 영향을 주었는지를 잘 보여주고 있다. 주인공을 따라다니는 유령(?)의 과거와 그 유령(?)이 사랑했던 여인을 만날 수 있는 좋은 작품이다. 누명, 사랑, 실종, 소문, 편견, 참여, 명예, 전쟁, 죽음, 유산, 망령, 시체, 가족 등이 중요한 의미를 가지는 단어들이다. 전작들처럼 이야기 전개가 느린감이 없지는 않지만 묘하게 끌리는 작품이다. 미스터리, 역사허구물, 스릴러, 심리소설, 경찰장르등에 속하는 작품이다. 시대적 배경도 그렇고 스코틀랜드가 사건의 중심 배경이라서 어휘나 문장의 구성에서 좀 어려운 부분이 있고 열린 결말로 끝난다는 것이 독자들의 불만인 거 같다.
