" After taking a break from his normal writing to write a so-so sequel to The Phantom of the Opera, Frederic Forsyth has returned to his more comfortable arena of suspense with this collection of five novellas and short stories. The stories are all quite distinct. The title story deals with the murder of an old man by a pair of street thugs and the subsequent investigation and trial. While reasonably good, it is perhaps the weakest in the bunch because the twist is not that hard to figure out. The other stories include a caper story set in the art world, a brief World War II story, a tale about drug smuggling (also with a rather obvious twist), and finally, a short novel about a survivor of the Battle of Little Bighorn. This final story is the best in the bunch, with a radical and unexpected change in the middle of the story. Forsyth's greatest works are in novels, not short stories, but overall, this collection holds up well. Forsyth fans should be pleased as should general suspense fans....." " 有名なフレデリック・フォーサイス読みたいと思いながら機会に恵まれず、やっと最新作「戦士たちの挽歌」で読むことができました。やはり、さすがフォーサイスとうならずに入られない短編ばかりでどれも目を離すことができませんでした。とは言いつつ、日本とは異なる司法制度の｢戦士たちの挽歌｣や読むだけで目がくらくらしそうな航空機の知識満載の「囮たちの掟」など一筋縄では行かない難解な語彙乱発には一応注釈がしてあるとはいえ参りました。でもその中でも読み進めて、え、そうなのかとあっと驚くような結末がわんさとつまった短編ばかりなのには、ホント唸ってしまいました。特に｢囮たちの掟｣は普通の怪しそうなヒッピー風の若者にいかにもインテリ風の実業家風の男に家族連れの休暇旅行を嗜んでいる紳士を登場させて私ならこいつが犯人であると思い込んでしまった概念をことごとく覆してくれてもうただただ感嘆するばかりです。冒頭出てくる気弱風の家族連れ紳士の張り出した罠に読んでいる私はもう完全にはまってしまいました。その中でも一番いいと思ったのは表題作「戦士たちの挽歌」です。やはりこれも犯人がつかまって裁判にかけられますがそれでもきっと犯人は別にいてこいつではないかと思い込んだ私の独り善がりの推理を見事に覆してくれました。勿論その結末にほとほと感心してしまいましたが、戦士たちの精神的なつながりが色濃い友情にあこがれます。一方的な推理しかできない自分が恥ずかしく思いました。「奇跡の値段」は、もう唸ること仕切りでしたがあの結末は痛いですね。見知らぬ海塊の地で奇跡のような話を聞かされたら、私だってアメリカ人の紳士みたいな行動してしまいます。映画「ダンス・ウィズ・ウルブス」と「フォーエバー・ヤング」を掛け合わせたようなラブ・ストーリー「時をこえる風」は、奇跡的なハッピー・エンドな終わり方のシンプルなラブ・ストーリーのほうがいいですね...."

The Veteran, The Art of the Matter, The Miracle, The Citizen, Whispering Wind 등의 작품으로 구성된 단편집이다. 내용은 나쁘지 않지만 표현이나 문장의 구조가 원서경험에 따라서 어려울 수 있는 작품이다.
