Among the Mad by Jacqueline Winspear

A fascinating and vivid look at overall psychiatric care in the 30's; and also an intimate focus on the workings of one particularly damaged and abused mind. As a psychology student myself, I was riveted. As an observer of human cruelties to one another; I was torn to my very core. Too often we overlook the pain of the mentally ill, especially those who are left to adapt to normal everyday life with little or no support in transition. Even today, 80 years later, Veterans with mental health problems struggle to get appropriate care. Jaqueline Winspear has done an excellent job at painting a sensitive - but at the same time, horrifying - picture of what possible tragedies can result when secret Government and Military programs are not carefully monitored, and individuals become the collateral damage. 전작보다는 읽기가 쉬운 편이다. 문장의 구조도 표현들도 전작에 비해서 접근성이 좋은 편이다. 첫 페이지를 읽으면 계속 읽게 만드는 저자의 능력도 뛰어나다. 가스 테러, PTSD(외상후 스트레스 장애), 경제적 위험, 다양한 사회적 갈등, 정신 병원, 군사 기밀, 희생, 거짓, 기억, 기록 등이 작품을 이해하는데 중요한 의미를 갖는 단어들이다. 미스터리적 내용도 좋지만 사람들을 바라보는 여주인공의 따뜻한 시선이 좋다. 이 작품이 전달하는 메시지는 작품의 배경이 되는 1932년도의 영국뿐만 아니라 전쟁과 밀접한 관련을 갖는 나라들에서 울림이 큰 거 같다.
