Murder on St. Nicholas Avenue (A Gaslight Mystery) by Victoria Thompson

"This was a fabulous departure from the normal gaslight mysteries since Frank and Sarah don't even make an appearance until the end of the book. Instead, Sarah's parents, Gino and Maeve are knee deep in solving the murder of not one but then two unsavory men, the swindling of several well to do but rather naive men, and what surprising ly turns out to be not just the disappearance of a woman but her murder as well. There are so many people who would have wanted both of these men dead that they could have started a good sized club. I must admit, these four make one heck of an investigative team. They very logically share what each one has learned, discuss what all the information could mean and plan their next moves with all the professionalism of an actual agency. I did, in fact, find myself finding it hard to remember that they weren't. Very impressive addition to the series. Bravo Ms. Thompson...."

내용 자체는 재미있지만 산만하기도 하고 이야기가 늘어나는 느낌을 줄 때가 있는 거 같다. 주인공들이 신혼여행을 떠나고 남은 가족과 친구들이 협력해서 사건을 해결하는 이야기는 나쁘지 않으나 참여하는 인물들이 많다 보니 주변적인 이야기가 많다. 코지 미스터리적 느낌이 가장 많이 나는 작품이었다. 좀 긴 옛날식 문장들이 곳곳에 등장하는 편이고 등장인물들의 교육적 사회적 배경에 따라서 비문법적 문장들도 좀 등장한다. 관용적 표현들은 거의 없는 거 같고 이전 작품들과 비슷한 수준의 어휘가 자주 등장한다. Domestic Violence, cheating, Panama, cellar, private investigator, femme fatale, money, suicide, returning, colored, prejudice, honeymoon, christmas, fired, new couple, family, associates, ransack, reporters 등이 중요한 의미를 갖는 단어들이다.
