Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz

Aristotle 과 Dante 라는 제목을 보고 이 책을 선택했다. 정말 제목이 매력적이지 않은가? 하지만 너무나 큰 기대를 했는지는 모르지만 전반부는 좀 지루한 감이 있었다. 자세한 이야기는 하기 힘들지만 이 책은 성장소설이자 자기정체성을 찾아가는 소설이다. 사람에 따라서 이 책에 대한 평가가 분명 다를 것이다. 작가도 이 책을 쓰면서 나름 고민을 했던거 같다. "I had second thoughts about writing this book. In fact, after I finished the first chapter or so, I had almost decided to abandon the project .." 라고 작가는 썼다. 이 책에 대해서 미리 알고 읽기 보다는 그냥 읽어 보는 것을 추천한다. 표현이나 단어가 비교적 무난하고 편집 구성도 읽기에 편안하게 되어 있는거 같다. 편견을 버리고 읽으면 좋은 원서다. "Flipped" "The Wonder Years" 같은 스토리가 좋지만 이 책을 읽는 것도 시간낭비는 아닌거 같다. 핵심어는 swimming, desert, family affairs, forgive, kissing, traffic accident, dreaming, angry, raining, universe, truck, dog, gay 등 이다. 이 책을 읽은 외국의 독자들은 다음과 같은 말을 했다  "I actually hugged this book after reading it ..." 読み終わった後に、周囲の人すべてを抱きしめ、「愛しているよ」と言いたくなるような小説は少ない. この本は、そんな希少な本のひとつた..."
