The Death of Ivan Ilych by LEO TOLSTOY

 벤자민 프랭클린이 말했던가 ? 산자가 피할 수 없는 두 가지가 있는데 그것은 세금과 죽음이라고 ... 학창시절 정말 감명깊게 읽었던 명작이다. 그 시절을 생각하면서 다시 읽어 보기로 결심했다. 그 당시에 읽었던 책과 다시 읽은 책은 출판사도 출판한 나라도 달라서 그런지 읽기 시작할 때 마치 다른 책을 읽는 느낌을 받았다. 영어원서로 읽고 싶으면 가능하면 내용을 좀 확인하는 게 좋을 듯 하다. 출판사나 출판연도등에 따라서 영어번역이나 구성이 좀 다를 수 있다. 아래의 표지 사진만 봐도 얼마나 많은 "The Death of Ivan llych" 가 있는지 알 수 있다. 이 책은 고전중의 고전이기 때문에 많은 사람들이 읽었을 것이다. 톨스토이라는 작가의 위대함이란 그의 책을 읽어본 사람이면 누구나 알 수 있을 것이다. 시대를 초월한 그의 책들이 주는 감동과 교훈은 정말 읽을 때 마다 새롭고 놀랍다.  "The Death of Ivan Ilych" 은 죽음이라는 것에 대해서 너무나 잘 다루고 있다. 특히 죽어가는 한 남자의 자기 묘사라던가 죽음을 둘러싼 주위 사람들에 대한 묘사들이 요즘 작품들과 비교해서 결코 뒤지지 않는다는 것을 알 수 있다. 읽으면서 "Stoner" 라는 작품이 생각나기도 했다. 핵심어는 vanity, regret, pretend, face down, fragile, confession, riddle, in vain 등이 아닐까 싶다.

 

- With this consciousness, and with physical pain besides the terror, he must go to bed, often to lie awake the greater part of the night. Next morning he had to get up again, dress, go to the law courts, speak and write ; or if he did not go out, spend at home those twenty-four hours a day each of which was a torture. And he had to live thus all alone on the brink of an abyss, with no one who understood or pitied him.

- When I am not, what will there be? There will be nothing. Then where shall I be when I am no more ? Can this be dying ?

- The syllogism he had learnt from Kiesewetter's Logic : "Caius is a man, men are mortal, therefore Caius is mortal," had always seemed to him correct as applied to Caius, but certainly not as applied to himself .......

- Why hast Thou done all this ? Why hast Thou brought me here ? Why, Why dost Thou torment me so terribly?"

- Maybe I did not live as I ought to have done ......

- I was going up in public opinion, but to the same extent life was ebbing away from me ....
