 이 책을 읽기 시작한 목적은 'spirituality' 이 아니라 'knowledge' 을 위해서 였다. 다시 말해서 '이슬람' '무슬림' '코란' 등에 대한 지식을 얻고자 읽었다. 다른 종교에 비해서 상대적으로 잘 모르는 면도 있고 사실 편견을 많이 갖고 대하는 종교이기에 이번 기회를 통해서 알아보고자 이 책을 읽기 시작했다. 책표지에 'A FORMER MUSLIM ..." 라는 문장이 있듯이 저자는 기독교로 개종한 사람이다. 그래서 인지 저자도 공정한 관점에서 책을 쓰고자 한거 같지만 몇몇 예시나 설명이 믿는 종교에 따라서 오해를 유발할 수도 있는거 같다. 종교의 가치론적 문제를 떠나서 역사적 관점에서 종교를 이해하고 각 종교가 추구하는 철학적 문화적 관점들의 차이를 조금이나마 이해할 수 있는 기회가 된 책이다. 'Sharia' 'Gospel' 'Tawhid' 'Trinity' 'Muhammad' 'Jesus' 'Quran' 'Bible' 'Jihad' 'Crusades' 등 논쟁의 여지가 있는 내용들을 나름 잘 설명하고 있는거 같다. 기회가 되면 다른 저자의 책을 읽어 볼까 싶다.

 

- If the eternal speech of Allah was written in Arabic, then  Arabic had to be Allah's preferred language.

- Since Muslims believe the Quran is an eternal ｅxpression of Allah, they do not think that Quran was written by men in any sense ....

- The Quran never rejects the possibility of one God subsisting in three persons.

- Persons is not the same as being. Your being is the quality that makes you what you are, but your person is the quality that makes you who you are ....

- in the case of Islam, the Quran is the eternal Word of God, and in the case of Christianity, Jesus is the eternal Word of God .....

- Both mercy and justice are ｅxpressions of God's absolute love. This poses a dilemma.

- To be a Muslim, one must confess the shahada ; "There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his messenger." .......

- .... those seven readings each proliferated once more as they were read according to different receivers, until around 1924, when the Muslim world produced its first Arabic Quran .......

- The three reasons most commonly given by Muslims to accept Muhammad as a prophet - his character, prophecies in the Bible, and miraculous scientific insights - are all very problematic .................

 역시 종교적인 내용은 쉽지 않은거 같다. 여기에 적기에는 민감한 내용들이 많은거 같다.
