책은 두 권의 시리즈로 구성되었는데 합치면 1000 페이지가 넘는다. 이 책 Magpie murders는 496페이지 정도고 두 번째 책인 Moonflower murders는 608페이지 정도라고 한다. 이 작품은 아직 읽지 못했다. 두 권을 다 읽어야 하는 건 아니기에 Magpie murders 만 읽어도 문제가 없다. 아무튼 읽는데 꽤 시간이 걸리는 작품이다. 다만 영어문장이 비교적 읽기에 쉽기 때문에 그나마 다행이라는 생각이 든다. 비영어권 독자들의 평가가 문장이나 표현이 보통(?)이라는 평이 있는 거 같고, 특히 일본 독자들 중에서는 영문이 읽기 쉽다는 평이 많은 거 같다. 그래서인지 영문으로 읽어 보려고 하는 분들이 있는 거 같은데.... 미리보기나 투자 시간을 고려하고 시도하는 게 좋을 거 같다. 읽다가 지칠 수도 있으니... 내용도 기본 이상인 것은 확실하다. 작품 안의 책 속에 등장하는 사건과 현실의 사건이 절묘하게 연결된 구성은 익숙한 구성이기도 하지만 이 작품만의 즐거움도 확실히 있다. 드라마도 보았는데 잘 만들어진 거 같다. 시간이 없는 분은 에피소드당 43-44분 정도 하는 6회의 드라마를 보는 것도 좋을 거 같다.
