Compared to Magpie Murders it seemed less well crafted, with some improbabilities (e.g., everybody overlooks an obvious plot point until near the end), and the book-within-the-book, though fun, is stylistically too similar to the main book -- everybody says "upset" all the time, nobody ever says "hysterical" or "gutted" or whatever; everybody says "to be honest" too much; both authors are given to a flat-footed, factual, somewhat colorless narrative style, and so on. For a novel about a book editor, it seems to be surprisingly in need of an editor....." " 「このミステリーがすごい! 2022」の海外部門で、4年連続の第1位獲得となるだろうか。今回は、「Moonflower Murders」である。日本語訳では、「ヨルガオ殺人事件」という題名で発売されるらしい。今回は「Magpie Murders」の主人公で、Alan Conwayの担当編集者だったSusan Ryelandが、パートナーであるAndreasと共同で殺人事件の捜査に乗り出す。編集者を退いたSusanは、Andreasとギリシャのクレタ島でホテルを経営していた。なかなかうまくはいかないのだが、それなりに経営は成り立っているようだ。そんなある日、英国の名門ホテルの経営者夫妻から、8年前に経営者が所有するホテルで起こった殺人事件と、最近行方不明になった経営者の娘の行方を捜査するように報酬つきで依頼されたことで、Susanはまた探偵として英国に渡り、捜査を開始することになった。ところがAlan Conwayも生前このホテルを訪れ、「Atticus Pund Take The Case」という推理小説を残していたのだ。そして最近行方不明になった経営者の娘のCecilyは、この小説を少し読んだ後に、行方をくらましたという...."

이야기 속의 이야기가 복잡하게 얽혀있는 작품이다. 여주인공이 진실을 찾아가는 현재의 이야기와 작중의 저자인 Alan Coway가 쓴 작품에 등장하는 탐정인 Atticus Pund의 이야기가 균형감 있게 잘 묘사되고 있는 작품인 거 같다. 액션이나 스파이장르하고 거리가 먼 작품이지만 이 책도 중독성이 있어서 읽기 시작하면 끝까지 읽게 만드는 거 같다. 두 사건들의 반전이나 복선의 구성도 이 작품의 매력이다. 게다가 표현들도 읽는데 큰 부담이 없어서 도움이 된 거 같다. 전작인 Magpie Murders보다는 이야기를 따라가기가 비교적 쉬워서 진도가 잘 나가는 작품이었다. 이 작품도 드라마로 만들어졌다.
