LONELY DEATH by Charles Todd

" This novel is part of a long series with the main character Ian Rutledge an Inspector from Scotland Yard. The time frame is in England right after WWI. Ian has returned to the Yard after four years of war and is still recovering from the trauma of the war. As with the rest of the novels I have read this murder mystery takes place in rural England in and around small villages. The descriptions and attention to detail of the various characters, the village life, the social and economic upheaval that is occurring in England is right on and is a pleasure to read. It is hard to believe the author (s) are American. As usual Inspector Rutledge has his hand full with numerous suspects surrounding a murderer who kills his victims, all war veterans, with a garret. A gruesome way to kill. I have adjusted to the fact that one almost needs a flow chart to keep track of the suspects. But one by one Ian eliminates them until he is down to at least two, and in the last chapter or two he solves the crime. The writing is germane to the times and is delightful to read. This novel was a little darker then others with Ian dealing with the trauma of the war and personal professional setbacks...."

1차 세계대전이 끝나고 2-3년이 지난 시기가 작품의 배경이다. '전화'를 찾는다는 것이 얼마나 힘들었는지를 잘 보여주는 작품이기에 요즘 작품들에서 흔한 의도적인 스마트폰의 노출 같은 장면은 없다. 시대가 그래서 그런지 이야기의 전개가 느린 면 이 있고 빠른 전개를 원하는 독자들은 지루함을 느낄 수도 있을 것이다. 연쇄살인, 콜드 케이스, 학대, 실종, 우정, 고백, 과거의 망령, 거짓 민원, 교살, 복수, 오해, 스톤 헨지, 누명, 결투, 개, 인식표, 칼, 학교 폭력, 기다림, 평가, 갈등, 트라우마, 전쟁의 흔적 등이 작품을 이해하는데 중요한 단어들인 거 같다. 작품전체의 이야기를 이해하는 데는 큰 문제가 없겠지만 문장이나 표현등이 영국적인 것이 많이 등장하고 시대가 현대물이 아니라서 작품에서 묘사되는 장면들이나 이야기가 어려울 수도 있을 것이다.
