편혜영작가의 '사육장 쪽으로'라는 단편집을 영어로 번역한 작품이다. The Trip, To the Kennels, Birth of the Zoo, Night Work, Parade, Friday Hello, Lost and Found, Commemoration 등의 약 30페이지 정도의 단편들이다. 심리소설, 생활 공포 소설 같은 말이 잘 어울리는 작품들이다. 외국 독자들이 이 작품의 내용이나 배경을 잘 이해할 수 있을지는 사실 모르겠다. 이 작품들에서 묘사되고 있는 내용들이 한국적이라고 말한다면 동의하지 않는 사람들도 있겠지만 실제로 주위에서 흔하게 접하는 내용들이라 낯설지가 않다. 어쩌면 이런 일상도 보거나 접하는 관점에 따라서 새로울 수 있는 거 같다. 한글판을 읽지 않아서 영어번역에 대한 자세한 의견을 말할 수 없으나 의미의 혼선이나 난해한 부분이 없이 읽을 수 있어서 좋았다. 번역한 분들의 노력도 중요한 거 같다.
