The Heist: An addictive and explosive thriller by Daniel Silva

" ell-known spy and art restorer, Gabriel Allon, was in Venice repairing artwork on a Veronese when called upon by General Cesare Ferraro, head of police, concerning the murder of James Jack Bradshaw, in Lake Como, an upscale resort area. Ferraro suspected Gabriel’s longtime friend, English art dealer, Julian Isherwood, as the prime suspect. Unfortunately, Julian is the fall guy. With all expenses paid by an acquaintance, Julian was asked to fly to Italy to view Bradshaw’s artwork. Bradshaw had a checkered past as a British spy; he secretly smuggled stolen artwork, and sold them to a mysterious collector. According to General Ferraro, included in the stolen paintings was a famous classical painting, Nativity with St. Francis and St. Lawrence, by Caravaggio. Although Ferraro possessed no proof to indict Julian for Bradshaw’s murder, he pressured Gabriel to find the missing masterpiece to keep his name and Julian’s out of the newspapers. It was unknown that Julian knew the top Israeli spy and sometimes acted on Gabriel’s behalf in clandestine operations. Gabriel wanted to keep this information secret, so he agreed to help Julian. Gabriel and his wife, Chiara, were expecting their first children, twins. Ferraro promised Gabriel’s wife would be well guarded during his leave. In addition, in a year, Gabriel would advance to Director of the Office in Israel; an agency similar to England’s MI6...."

오랜만에 다니엘 실버의 작품을 읽었다. 이전에 읽었던 'The Killer Artist'와 'The Other Woman'도 내용의 완성도가 좋았지만 장편이다 보니 읽는데 좀 힘든 부분이 많았다는 기억이 있다. 하지만 이 작품은 시간 가는 줄 모르고 읽었다. 장편, 많은 인물들의 등장과 발음하기 힘든 이름들, 낯선 지명들이 많이 등장하고 화가나 그림들에 대한 언급이 많기 때문에 인터넷의 도움을 받아야 하는 점들이 작품을 읽는데 어려운 요소일 수 있지만 생각보다 진도가 잘 나가는 작품이다. 스파이장르의 재미와 그림을 찾아가는 모험적 요소도 있어서 이야기가 매력적이다. 주로 이스라엘적 관점에서 정치, 역사, 전쟁사를 다루고 있기 때문에 작품에서 언급하는 이야기에 동의하지 않는 부분도 있겠지만 주인공이 이스라엘의 스파이기 때문에 작품에서는 어쩔 수 없는 부분도 있는 거 같다. 하지만 고민하는 주인공의 모습이나 돈보다는 인간의 생명을 더 귀하게 생각하는 태도, 다른 문화에 대한 이해등은 주인공의 매력이다. 문장은 심플한 편이고 표현들도 난해하지 않아서 좋았다.
