" If you are looking for a fast paced, edge of your seat kind of action, you might want to steer clear of the Inspector Rutledge series. I really enjoy them because I like his character and because I believe that the pace of the mystery reflects a serious desire to solve the mystery and see the problem through. I highly recommend reading them in order because your knowledge of his background is an important element of his approach to a problem. I also like the time period that is reflected in the setting: post World War I and this experience plays a major role in his character and I believe in his approach to his position at Scotland Yard. He is frequently at odds with his supervising officer, but he continue to build his cases carefully and completely....."

이전 시리즈처럼 이야기의 전개는 느리지만 독자들의 인내심과 관심을 끝까지 사로잡는 데는 성공한 작품인 거 같다. 큰 반전을 기대하지 않고 읽은 작품이지만 등장하는 인물들의 매력 때문에 계속 읽게 되는 작품이었다. 이야기가 계속 겉도는 느낌도 있지만 문장의 구성이나 표현들은 전작들에 비해서 무난한 거 같고 새로운 인물들의 등장들이 작품의 흥미도를 높이는 거 같다. 실종, 범죄자, 전쟁, 시체유기, 복수, 약혼, 병원, 추적, MI5, 차별, 인질, 갈등, 결투, 도망자, 누명 등이 중요한 의미는 가지는 단어들인 거 같다.
