" As a huge fan of the Ian Rutledge series, I enjoyed this seventeenth edition which provides a glimpse into Ian's world before the start of World War I. With multiple murders in the book, the characters are many, numbering over twenty primary with additional secondary characters. Their stories are varied but similar with the pace leaning to the slow side. But one of the reasons I like this series is that the police procedurals are fundamental, based on intellect, personal involvement and legwork without the benefit of modern day technology. The emotion of the onset of war was very real to me. The spirit and excitement of the beginning of the war is slowly replaced by the realities of what is to come with the final scene of the book. This is a good place to start reading the series, knowing that even stronger, more interesting stories are waiting in the next sixteen volumes...."

현대물 하고는 다른 '느림'의 중독성을 보여주는 작품이자 한번 읽기 시작하면 끝까지 읽어야 하는 작품이다. 1차 세계대전의 시작과 배경에 대한 이야기를 잘 보여주는 역사물이자 주인공 Ian Rutledge'가 1차 세계대전에 참여하기 전에 Scotland Yard에서 막지막으로 다루었던 사건을 다루는 역사 허구물의 작품이다. 전쟁, 광기, 재판, 사형, 복수, 고독, 묘지, 추적, 누명, 결혼, 우유, 아편제, 거짓, 거만, 정치, 운명, 사랑, 희생, 의문, 법의 공정성 등이 작품을 이해하는데 중요한 단어들인 거 같다. 의문스러운 사건들의 발생, 다양한 인물들의 등장, 1차 세계대전을 맞이하는 시대적 상황, 개인의 선택과 사회적 상황들이 참 재밌게 묘사되고 있는 작품이다. 장편이고 현대물에 비하면 이야기의 전개가 느리게 보이지만 읽어보면 재밌는 작품이라는 것을 알 수 있다. 문장의 구조나 표현등은 이전 작품들과 비슷한 거 같다.
