The Second Chance Convenience Store 불편한 편의점 by 김호연

" I switched gears this week, as I do sometimes with my reads, and was pulled in by The Second Chance Convenience Store's themes. I’m a big believer in paying it forward. One never knows how meaningful it could be when you extend a little kindness. For a retired teacher, Mrs Yeom, gives a homeless man with little memory of his past, Dok-go, a chance when no one else would. She hires him to do the night shift at her store after circumstances show her he has strong integrity. Though the other employees dislike him for various reasons, Dok-go pays them no mind. The two make quite a pair, and Dok-go is very protective of Mrs. Yeom. Through time, Dok-go becomes more comfortable with himself and becomes more sociable. As his mind becomes clearer, so does his memory of his past, which is much more than he bargains for. I enjoyed the story, its underlying meaning, and the unexpectedness of what unraveled with Dok-go’s past. The ending was quite special because it embraced my belief in paying it forward....."

'The Second Chance Convenience Store'가 '불편한 편의점'이라는 작품의 영어판이라는 것을 알고서 좀 놀랐다. 사실 이 작품은 한참 전부터 알고 있었지만 읽고 싶은 생각은 별로 없었다. '편의점'에 관한 작품들을 읽은 경험이 있기 때문에 이런 내용에 대한 큰 기대가 별로 없었다. 무거운 느낌의 작품에서 판타지, 생활 미스터리에 이르기까지 나름 다양한 '편의점'이야기를  읽었기 때문에 큰 기대가 없는 작품이었다. 다만 한국인 작가의 영어번역판이기 때문에 읽기 시작한 작품이다. 나의 선입견과는 다르게 재밌는 작품이었다. '힐링'을 가장한 체 자기 연민, 사회고발, 공감하기 힘든 환타지적 이야기 전개보다는 '삶'을 다루고 있는 거 같아서 좋았다. 영어로 번역된 문장이나 표현들이 읽기에 편해서 감사했다. 재밌게 읽었다.
