You just use the future to escape the present.” "物語の語り手は、痩せっぽちの冴えないMiles。彼がThe Great Perhaps(もしかしたらあるかもしれない偉大な何か？）を求めて、私立の全寮制の高校へと転校するところから物語は始まる。Milesのルームメイトは背は低いけど存在感たっぷりのthe Colonel。Milesは、Colonelや彼の友達である「超ホットな」Alaskaとつるむようになり、Alaskaに淡い恋心を抱くが、Alaskaには既に彼氏が居て…。三角関係？と思うが、物語は中盤、意外な展開を向かえる。ある「事件」が起こり（136 days beforeから物語は始まり、だんだんと事件の日へとカウントダウンされていく）、Mileたちは戸惑いもがきながらも、真実を探求していく。いわゆる、rite of passageを描いた作品だが、クスッと笑えるところ、いっしょに悩んでしまうところ、深く考えさせられるところ、いろいろあって、とても読み応えのある小説。英語はシンプルだが、スラングがやや多い" "いわゆる青春小説です。
登場人物はどれも魅力的で、最期まで飽きずに読めます。特に転校当日いきなり登場するColonelのやや偏屈な個性は強烈です。そして主人公が恋する（彼はHotと表現していますが、むしろeccentricといったほうがぴったりの）アラスカの危なっかしい魅力は、物語の前半を引っ張ります。物語は二部構成。前半はそのColonel,Alaskaそして日本人のTakumiといった友人たちや教師たちとの学校での日々、後半はアラスカが彼らの前から姿を消し、その後日談になります。残念なことにアラスカが消えた後半は、どちらかというと思索的な内容が多くなり、前半に比べ話の勢いは落ちるのですが、それでも最後まで読む価値はあります"
YA( Young Adult) 계열의 소설이다. '성장' '방항' '죽음' 이라는 단어가 이 책을 대표한다는 느낌을 받으면서 읽었다. 개인적으로는 솔직히 큰 재미는 없었지만 글의 구성은 괜찬은 편이다. YA 계열이라서 그런지 문장은 크게 어렵지 않으나 가금씩 읽기에 불편한 부분도 나오는거 같다. 하지만 작품에 등장하는 몇몇 문장들은 독자들에게 이런저런 생각을 하게 만든다.

- ... time to tell him ..... ; that I forgave him, and that she forgave us, and that we had to forgive to survive in the labyrinth ........ But we can't know better until knowing better is useless.
- Ultimately ...... I believe now that we are greater than the sum of our parts .... There is a part of her greater than the sum of her knowable parts ....
