신년초에는 나에게 희망을 줄 수 있는 책을 읽을 계획으로 선택했던 책이다. 성인용 책보다는 청소년들 대상의 책들이 좀 더 심플하게 희망을 말해주지 않을가 싶어서 선택했다. 사람마다 다르겠지만 결론적으로 희망보다는 숙제를 더 많이 주는 작품이다. 이 책을 읽으면서 'bravery' 라는 단어의 의미에 대해서 계속 생각했다. 'bravery' 란 무엇인가 ? 갑자기 소크라테스의 용기에 대한 이야기를 다시 생각해 보는 기회가 되었다. ("내가 알고 있고 확신하고 있는 사실이나 판단이라고 하는 것들이 참으로 옳은 것인가 다신 한 번 반성해 ....더 신중하고 사려깊은 생각의 쳬계 ...") 사실 이 책에서 내가 느낀 'bravery' 는 13살 주인공의 혼자 떠나는 여행과 그 여정에서 만나는 낯선 사람들에 대한 열린 태도 등이다. 현대 사회일수록 타인과의 만남은 'open' 보다는 'closed'에 가까운 거 같다. 그래서 더 외로운 듯 .... 지인중에 한 분은 2020년은 좀 더 'flexible' 하게 살고자 한다고 했다. 나는 좀 더 'brave' 하게 살고 싶다. 이 책은 분명히 한계를 가지고 있다. 하지만 영어공부를 하는데는 도움이 될 수 있는 책이다. 그리고 적절한 이야기의 감동과 읽는 속도감을 즐기고 싶다면 읽을 만하다. 가끔씩 나오는 주인공의 농담(pun)은 나를 미소 짓게 했다.
