THE COVE by CATHERINE COULTER

"I am a voracious reader and love series. I have been seeing Catherine Coulter's books advertised as FBI suspense and was very excited that it was a long one.(19 books in the series) I started reading this book after I finished Robert Crais' latest. Now there's a great author! So I'm reading and I keep asking myself 'what am I missing? What the heck is going on?' ..." "What I didn't like so much were two things: parts of the story were too unbelievable. For example the two main characters (the FBI agent and the woman he is chasing) have a very rocky relationship. She is pointing a gun in his gut on one page and about three pages later, he is proposing marriage to her. I found that hard to swallow. There were a few other blips in the story line, too. The other problem I had with the book was how Coulter kept switching point of view when telling the story. For whole paragraphs, we are in the head of the FBI agent, and all of a sudden and without any warning, we are in the head of his love interest or one of the villains.."

"長編シリーズのトップだし評価も高いので読んでみました。登場人物全員、無駄口が多すぎ。そして長い。これらがなければ100ページは減ったでしょう。こんな時にこんな長い会話？と違和感を覚えた場面も度々ありました。主人公のサリーは、たいへんな目に遭ってきた女性です。ただ、元々上院議員に仕えていた優秀なキャリアウーマンという設定ですが、人を見る目がなく、相手が異常でも手の内をぺらぺらと話しては殴られ、おおよそ賢いとは思えません。ストーリー自体は悪くないのですが、途中で嫌気がさしてしまいました。最後まで何とか読みましたが。コールターの他の作品はそれなりにおもしろかったので..." "この作品もよく練られたプロット、想像だにしない犯人 ページを捲る手が止まりません。でも、ヒロインが可哀想過ぎたりもします。作家がヒストリカル・ロマンスが原点だからでしょうか。ロマンス要素もタップリとあります。
女性受けするシリーズですね ..."

서술 시점의 과도한 변화, 이야기 전개가 너무나 황당하다는 평가들이 많은데 개인적으로 그 정도는 이해를 할 수 있다고 본다. 다만 이야기 전개상 불필요한 대화나 이 작품의 로맨스적 요소는 인정하지만 ... 가끔씩 등장하는 유치한 상황들은 읽기에 불편했다. 이런 점들을 개선하면 좀 더 좋은 작품이 되지 않을가 싶다. 'evil' 이라는 단어가 이 작품을 잘 표현하는거 같다. 인간이 얼마나 이기적이고 잔인한 존재가 될 수 있는지를 잘 보여주는 작품이다. 개인적으로는 130 페이지이후로 리듬감있게 읽었다.
