Emily Goes to Exeter by M.C. Beaton

"I have read a number of M C Beaton's novels including some in both the Agatha Raisin and Hamish MacBeth series. To be honest I can't say I really liked them very much, but I thought I would try the first one in the Travelling Matchmaker series. What a joy - a thoroughly entertaining, amusing and at times outrageous and impossible Regency romp. It was a wonderful piece of escapism which I read in one sitting. I will certainly read the others in the series when I get an opportunity...." 

마차나 말이 주요한 교통수단이던 시절의 영국을 배경으로 하는 작품이다. 좀 지루할 거 같은 느낌으로 이 작품을 읽기 시작했는데 의외로 초반부터 액션 장면들이 나오고 아기자기한 인물들 간의 관계나 이야기 전개는 읽을 만했다. 특히 15세부터 마지막 고용주가 죽을 때까지인 45세까지 'servant' 일을 한 여성이 이 작품의 주인공이다. 정규적인 교육을 받지 못했지만 천성적인 현명함을 가진 여성이다. 모험을 꿈꾸는 여성이지만 시대가 시대인만큼 완전히 독립적인 존재는 아니다. 하지만 나름 매력적인 인물이다. 책 커버에 'travelling matchmaker'라는 문구가 있듯이 남녀들의 사랑을 이어주는 역할을 한다. 문장들은 이해하는 데는 큰 문제가 없지만.... 까다로운 문장들이 좀 있는 것도 사실이다.
