Out of Circulation by Miranda James

"As a cat lover, I enjoy reading Miranda James' novels about Charlie Harris in his 35 pound Maine coon cat, Diesel. Set in the fictional Mississippi town of Athena. As in all of the "Cat in the Stacks" mysteries, much of the action takes place in the library where Charlie Harris volunteers. "Out of Circulation," is the fourth book in the series. Central to the plot of "Out of Circulation," is the community's dislike of Vera Cassity, a wealthy, elderly member of "Friends of the Library" who takes great pride in supporting good causes (and being recognized for it). James succeeds in getting readers to despise Vera as much as do most of the book's characters, by portraying the woman as so entirely despicable that we are unable to imagine how anyone could like her. As in all of these books, complexities of race, class, sexual orientation, and family life provide an interesting backdrop to the main action...."

지금까지 읽은 다른 작품들에 비해서 이야기가 단순한편이다.  본문에 ' ....have a few skeletons in the family closet ..." 라는 문장이 나오는데 이 작품을 가장 잘 표현하는 거 같다. 가족들에 숨겨진 이야기, 성의 정체성, 가족을 위한 희생 등이 이 작품의 중심 내용이다. 이 작가의 작품에 등장하는 희생자나 범죄자는 주로 책의 커버에 묘사된 고양이를 싫어하거나 미움을 받는 존재들이기 때문에 글의 초반부터 대충 흐름을 알 수 있다. 이 작품도 어느 정도는 알 수 있었지만 끝까지 즐겁게 읽을 수 있는 작품이었다. 전체적으로는 어렵지 않은 문장 구조이지만 가끔씩 신선한(?) 단어들이 등장한다.
