The Babylon Idol by Scott Mariani

"I've read all 15 books in this series and I think this is one of Scott's best books. It opened really strongly and kept up a relentless pace of thrills and spills for over 100 pages, after which the pauses in the action were only to fill the reader in on the history behind the story. The history information was interesting, but the action really kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed this book hugely and am really looking forward to reading Scott's next book in the series, The Bach Manuscript. Well done Scott, and keep 'em coming...."

Ben Hope 시리즈의 초기 작품인 The Alchemist's Secret와 내용이 연결되는 작품이다. 이 작품에 등장하는 악당이 The Babylon Idol에서도 등장하는데 그의 새로운 추종자들하고 사막에서 죽음을 맞이한다. 제목을 인터넷에서 검색해보면 알겠지만 중동의 신비스러운 역사를 배우게 되는 계기를 이 작품은 제공한다. 내전 중인 전쟁터에서 고대의 보물을 찾고자 하는 사람들 간의 긴장감 넘치는 싸움, 복수심에 불타는 인물들의 끊임없는 추격 전등 영화로 만들면 볼만한 장면이 많은 작품이다. 문장은 읽기에 무난하다 다만 액션 장면이나 고대 보물에 대한 설명 등을 빼면 사실 내용은 별로 없다. 주인공의 여자관계에 대한 이야기 전개는 좀 실망스럽다.
