Cat Trick by Sofie Kelly

....  There were some hints at things that happened in previous volumes but that info wasn't crucial, the story worked fine for me without knowing the background. When the cat's special abilities were mentioned right at the beginning I sort of thought "oh my", but in the end it turned out to be a classical detective story after all. The cats helped a bit but not so much that the story became utterly incredible. Librarian Kathleen - with the help of her cat - finds a body. She is determined not to meddle because she doesn't want to risk her budding relationship with the attractive police detective. But several of her friends seem to be involved in the case in one way or the other and after a while she starts asking questions herself. There are a few side stories, too, about a friend moving house and about Kathleen's decision whether to stay or move back home. All in all the story is comfortably embedded in a slightly idealized environment where it is easy to feel "at home". It is defintely not a book for action fans, it is more cozy than thrilling, but there was enough suspense to make me read on deep into the night ....

페이지가 337부터 357까지 책의 버전에 따라서 다른 거 같다. Lee Child의 Jack Reacher 시리즈보다는 쉬운 편이지만 가끔씩 'a people person' 같은 재밌는(?) 표현들이 등장한다. 대화체가 많고 문장의 구조는 비교적 평이하다. 코지 미스터리 장르답게 사건과 직접적인 관계가 없는 다양한 이야기가 등장하는데.... 가끔씩 생략하고 싶다는 생각을 한다. 여전히 등장하는 고양이들에 대한 사랑스러운 묘사도 좋고 사건에 대한 경찰과 주인공의 균형적인 조화도 다른 작가들의 작품들에 비해서 좋다. 하지만 여주인공이 매력적인 남자 형사와 애정관계를 형성하고 사건을 두고 갈등을 한다는 점은 전형적인 패턴을 따르고 있다. 하기야 주민들이 경찰을 불신하고 여주인공에게 사건 해결을 부탁한다면....
