Change of Fortune by Jana DeLeon

"ミス・フォーチュン・ミステリー・シリーズ16冊を，まだすべて読み終えたわけではないが，個人的には，第1作Louisiana Longshot 邦題『ワニの町へ来たスパイ』創元推理文庫），第8作 Fortune Hunter と並んで非常に楽しめた１冊である。　本作は，シリーズの１１作目にあたる。南部の町シンフルに潜伏しているＣＩＡ工作員フォーチュンが，いよいよ武器商人アーマドと最終対決する様子が，巨大ワニの捕獲作戦やカフェでの食材盗難事件と並行して描かれている。はたしてフォーチュンは宿敵を倒して自由を手に入れることができるか？　また，カーターとの恋の行方は？　と，ハラハラドキドキしながら読み進めることができた。　英文の構造は複雑ではないが，難しい語彙や表現が多い気がする。わからない部分は読み飛ばしてもさほど問題はないが，主人公を中心としたコミカルかつシニカルな会話部分を楽しもうとすると（会話での軽妙なやりとりが，本シリーズの大きな魅力のひとつでもあるので），やはり辞書やＰＣで調べながら，ということになる。それでも，一部の口語表現やスラングなどは，一般の辞書には載っていないが。
　本書を単独で楽しむよりは，やはり１作目から順を追って読んでいくことをお勧めする。３作目までは邦訳が出ているので，それを読んで続きが読みたいと思われたら，是非原書にチャレンジしてほしい。　なお，日本国内に在庫がある（数冊は日本で印刷・製本されているようだ）場合はすぐに届くが，アメリカからの取り寄せなら３週間～１か月かかることを覚悟しておいてもらいたい ....." "This is such a great series. You can always expect it to contain lots of mystery, mayhem and laugh out loud moments and this book doesn't disappoint in anyway. I even caught Mr serious (aka my dad) laughing a few times in this book and with such a wonderful cast of characters, why not? Fortune is fed up with hiding and with the summer all most over its time to take charge and take down Ahmad once and for all. It's just a shame Sinful isn't the quiet peaceful town everybody thinks it is, with an alligator roaming lose in the streets chasing people up lampposts and food being stolen from the local cafe, can Fortune spend enough time preparing for her toughest mission for the CIA or will Ahmad and his mole finally get the revenge he so desperately desires. One thing is for certain, where Fortune is you can find Ida Belle, Gertie and Carter. Cassandra Campbell is the voice of Fortune and I can't imagine anybody else could do a better job of bring the characters to life...."

역시 재밌는 작품이다. 시리즈의 11번째 작품인데 유머, 미스터리, 액션, 로맨스적 요소를 잘 보여주는 작품이다. 일본독자의 감상평처럼 문장의 구조는 평이하지만 등장하는 단어나 표현은 좀 어려울 수 있다. 하지만 작품을 이해하기에 불가능할 정도는 아니기에 재밌게 감상할 수 있는 작품이다. 악어, 부동산, 위장, 암살, 악덕 무기상, 의문의 킬러, 새로운 출발, 도난 사건, 함정, 악인을 잡기 위한 악인과의 전략적 제휴, 배신자, 먹이, 유혹, 유도 등의 단어들이 중요한 의미를 가지는 단어들인 거 같다.
